Service Description
This half-day route covers key landmarks on both sides of the Danube, combining one short ride on Budapest’s historic M1 line with a mostly level walk and a gentle uphill section in the Castle District. Route outline 1. Pest: City Park and the 1896 metro We start with the Millennium Underground Railway (M1), opened in 1896 and widely described as the oldest underground line on the European continent. We ride to Heroes’ Square, created for the 1896 millennium celebrations, then walk through City Park. Along the way we pass Vajdahunyad Castle (an eclectic complex completed in the early 20th century) and see the exterior of Széchenyi Thermal Bath, opened in 1913. 2. Pest: Andrássy Avenue, Opera area, Basilica We continue along Andrássy Avenue, developed in the late 19th century and part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing. When access is possible, we step into the Hungarian State Opera House main foyer (the building opened in 1884). We then visit St. Stephen’s Basilica; the dome terrace is an optional add-on at 96 meters, subject to weather and opening hours (separate ticket). 3. Buda: crossing and Castle District viewpoints We cross the Danube on the Chain Bridge, completed in 1849 as the first permanent bridge between Buda and Pest. On the Buda side we pass the Castle Garden Bazaar (late-19th-century Neo-Renaissance, restored in the 2010s) and walk up to the Buda Castle District, part of the UNESCO World Heritage area. The walk includes Buda Castle courtyards, Matthias Church (13th-century origins), and Fisherman’s Bastion (built 1895–1902), finishing with panoramic views over the river and Pest.
