Iconic Lines of Budapest

Service Description

This 3-hour special tour is built around Budapest’s public transport network: we use several iconic lines and vehicles as the “route,” while still visiting major landmarks and viewpoints along the way. The focus is practical and factual—how the system works, what makes certain lines historically significant, and how locals move through the city—combined with some of Budapest’s best moving panoramas from trams and riverside tracks. We start at Heroes’ Square and board Metro Line M1 (the Millennium Underground Railway), opened in 1896. From there we ride to Vörösmarty Square in the city center, then walk to the Danube at Vigadó Square to catch Tram 2. This line runs along the river and is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most scenic tram routes thanks to its continuous views of the Danube and the Buda skyline. Riding north, we pass the Parliament area and continue to Jászai Mari Square, where we switch to the iconic Tram 4–6 on the Grand Boulevard—one of the city’s busiest tram corridors. From Széll Kálmán Square we continue by electric Castle Bus up to the Buda Castle area. The final part of the tour is a short, easy walk to end at the Várkert Bazár (Castle Garden Bazaar), a riverside architectural complex at the foot of Castle Hill. From here, you can optionally continue your own program—one popular add-on is a BKV public boat service on the Danube (ticket required), depending on season and schedule. Tickets and practical info Public transport tickets and passes are not included. You can choose and purchase the right ticket type in the BudapestGO app, or via the official website of Budapest’s transport authority (BKK): https://bkk.hu/en/. Good to know – The exact sequence may change due to service updates, traffic, or temporary line disruptions. – The tour involves short walks between stops and some stairs in stations; it can be adapted where possible.
